Certificate Course on Carbohydrate Counting (CCCC)

Description

Carbohydrates have the most direct and immediate impact on blood glucose levels, and hence, their incorrect estimation can lead to frequent highs or lows, leading to poor glycemic control and increased long‑term complications. Accurately matching insulin doses to carbohydrate intake is vitally important in people with type 1 diabetes who depend on insulin treatment, but is also relevant in people with type 2 diabetes who are on insulin therapy.

Carbohydrate counting allows for greater flexibility in food choices while supporting better glycemic control, making it an essential skill for people with type 1 diabetes. It is also a core competency for healthcare professionals involved in diabetes care while discussing with their patients.

This “Certificate Course on Carbohydrate Counting (CCCC)” addresses a critical need in type 1 diabetes management.

The course is organized into four modules for easy and structured learning, simplifying a complex topic into practical, everyday learning.

The first module deals with the vital role carbohydrates and other macronutrients, viz. proteins, fats and fiber play in body functions and metabolism. In the second module, the rationale of carbohydrate counting is explained. Matching the carbohydrate intake with insulin dose, and use of correction factor is discussed through appropriate case studies. The third module covers the carbohydrate content in commonly eaten Indian foods through engaging pictorial depictions of a wide variety of foods. In the fourth module, the topic of nutrition labeling is covered, helping the participant understand how to read food labels.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to confidently estimate carbohydrate intake, make informed insulin adjustments, and adopt and support healthier eating patterns.

For people with diabetes, this means better glucose control through healthier food choices, while for healthcare professionals, it provides a structured, patient‑centered approach to patient education and counseling.
