COURSE DESCRIPTION

Diabetes is now an important public health problem, with an estimated 463 million people with diabetes across the world in 2019, a figure that is projected to rise to 700 million by 2045 as per the IDF Diabetes Atlas, 2019. In India, there were an estimated 77 million people with diabetes in 2019, a figure that may rise to 134 million by 2045.

It is estimated that about half of all cases of diabetes are not diagnosed, and even of those diagnosed, only about a half are put on treatment. Even among these, at least half are not managed properly.

Several reasons have been attributed for this, like lack of proper knowledge among patients about the disease and its management, dearth of adequate support and care, psycho-social and behavioral issues, etc.

In such a scenario, the role of a diabetes educator becomes crucial to ensure proper management and care of diabetes by working with the patients and their caregivers.

In view of this, experts at the Chellaram Diabetes Institute have developed a unique online Certificate Course for Diabetes Educators (CCDE), which aims to build the capacity of diabetes educators in the management and care of diabetes.

The online platform allows for the course participant to learn at his/her own pace, and via, desktop, laptop, tablet or mobile.

The course consists of nine modules, which include lecture videos, case studies and activities, which can be completed in about eight hours, and in multiple sessions.

The modules are as follows:

In this module, introductory aspects of diabetes will be covered. The topics include: history, epidemiology, definition, classification and pathophysiology of diabetes.

The topics of pre-diabetes and how to make a diagnosis of diabetes will be covered in this module.

This module talks about the various non-pharmacological strategies employed in the management of diabetes, and covers in brief the aspects related to diet prescription in diabetes, exercise planning in diabetes, tobacco cessation and stress management.

This module discusses the pharmacological management of diabetes, viz. the various oral anti-diabetic drugs and injectable therapy. It also covers the insulin injection techniques, as well as the monitoring of diabetes.

This module covers the main complications of diabetes, viz. acute hyperglycemic complications, hypoglycemia, microvascular complications – diabetic kidney disease, diabetic retinopathy and diabetic neuropathy, macrovascular complications – cardiovascular disease, stroke and peripheral arterial disease, and non-vascular complications – infections in diabetes.

This module discusses diabetes management in two special categories, viz. gestational diabetes and diabetes in the elderly.

Hypertension and dyslipidemia are two important comorbid conditions in diabetes, and are discussed in this module.

This module talks about the crucial role of a diabetes educator in diabetes care.

The last module covers the two topics of diabetes self-management education and sick day rules.

Each module begins with a pre-test consisting of MCQs, and concludes with a post-test to assess the learning progress of the course participant.

At the end of the course, there is an exit exam, which the participant has to clear in order to obtain the course completion certificate.
