Certificate Course in Obesity Prevention & Management (CCOPM)

Description

Course Overview

Obesity is becoming a major public health issue globally, with increasing prevalence in both developed and developing countries. As confirmed by the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC), the global age-standardized mean BMI has risen from 21.7 kg/m² in 1975 to 24.2 kg/m² in 2014 in men and from 22.1 kg/m² to 24.4 kg/m² in women. The age-standardized prevalence of obesity increased from 3.2% in 1975 to 10.8% in 2014 in men, and from 6.4% to 14.9% in women. In India, the estimated prevalence of obesity is 3.2% in men and 5.1% in women, while overweight affects 16.4% of men and 15.5% of women. The growing rate of obesity correlates with an increased risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer, negatively affecting quality of life and driving up healthcare costs.

Course Content

This course will provide healthcare professionals with a comprehensive understanding of the multifactorial causes of obesity, including genetic, physiological, behavioral, and environmental factors. You will learn about various management strategies, including dietary modifications, physical activity, behavioral counseling, pharmacological treatments, and bariatric surgery. The course will also cover practical approaches to weight management, including how small reductions in weight can significantly reduce the risk of associated health problems. For example, even a 5-10% reduction in body weight can lead to significant improvements in blood pressure, blood glucose levels, and cholesterol, thus reducing the risk of chronic conditions. The course will emphasize sustainable weight loss methods and the role of healthcare providers in supporting patients in managing obesity.

Target Audience and Importance

The Certificate Course in Obesity Prevention and Management (CCOPM) is designed for healthcare professionals, including general practitioners, dietitians, and other members of the multidisciplinary team, who are involved in the prevention and management of obesity. Given the crucial role of primary care physicians and healthcare teams in addressing obesity, this course will enhance your expertise in providing effective, evidence-based solutions. With medical costs rising progressively as BMI increases, understanding obesity’s impact and learning how to manage it effectively is critical to improving patient outcomes and reducing healthcare burdens.
