COURSE DESCRIPTION

There has been an alarming increase in the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in India over the past two decades, so much so that CVD accounts for 24% of all deaths among adults aged 25-69 years.

In a related development, the prevalence of diabetes in India too has shown an increasing trend in the world, and particularly in India.

CVD accounts for an overwhelming 65-75% of deaths in people with diabetes. In India one third of CHD patients have associated diabetes.

Dyslipidemia has been closely linked to the pathophysiology of CVD and is a key independent modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

Indians are known to have a unique pattern of dyslipidemia with lower HDL cholesterol, increased triglyceride levels and higher proportion of small dense LDL cholesterol.

Successful prevention and management of dyslipidemia will help in primary and secondary prevention of CVD.

General practitioners or primary care physicians manage a significant number of cases of dyslipidemia, and their capacity building would go a long way in addressing the problem of dyslipidemia in India.

Recognizing this need, the Chellaram Diabetes Institute has designed a unique online course: CME Certificate Course in Lipid Disorder Management (CCCLDM).

The course addresses the basics of prevention and management of dyslipidemia, incorporating the latest guidelines, and keeping in mind Indian conditions. It offers the benefit of flexible learning for the doctors.

The course consists of four modules, which include lecture videos, case studies and activities, which can be completed in four to six hours, and in multiple sessions.

The four modules are as follows:

This module discusses lipids and their classification, lipoproteins and apolipoproteins, and gives an introduction to lipid disorders.

This module provides an introduction to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), lipid profile testing and treatment criteria, and discusses the non-pharmacological management of lipid disorders, viz. diet and exercise recommendations.

This module elucidates the pharmacological management of lipid disorders, principally the role of statin based therapy, and the various non-statin based therapies.

This module talks about the advances in lipid management, focusing on newer anti-LDL cholesterol drugs as well as newer anti-triglyceride drugs to target residual risk, and also highlights the role of HDL cholesterol.

Each module begins with a pre-test consisting of MCQs, and concludes with a post-test to assess the learning progress of the course participant.

On successful completion of the course, the participant would receive a certificate of completion from Chellaram Diabetes Institute.

The online platform allows for the doctor to learn at his/her own pace, and via, desktop, laptop, tablet or mobile.
