COURSE DESCRIPTION
Diabetes is becoming a major public health issue, with an estimated 425 million people with diabetes across the world in 2017, a figure that is projected to rise by 48% to 629 million by 2045. In developing countries, the projected increase is likely to be even more alarming. For instance, in India, there were an estimated 73 million people with diabetes in 2017, a figure that may almost double to 143 million by 2045. [IDF Diabetes Atlas, 8th edition, 2017]
Globally, diabetes led to almost 1 trillion USD in health expenditure in 2015, which was about 11.6% of total health spending on adults. [IDF Diabetes Atlas, 7th edition, 2015]
In India, the average annual outpatient cost of treating diabetes was estimated to be almost Rs. 15,000 per patient; people with complications spend up to 4 times more. [Bhansali A. JAPI 2013;61-95; Kumpatla S, et al. JAPI 2013;61:102-9]
It is, therefore, imperative that active efforts be taken to address the problem of diabetes. One of the measures found very effective is the capacity building of healthcare professionals, particularly primary care physicians.
Considering this, experts at the Chellaram Diabetes Institute have developed a unique online CME Certificate Course in Diabetes Management (CCCDM), which aims to build the capacity of doctors, particularly primary care physicians, in the prevention and management of diabetes.
The online platform allows for the doctor to learn at his/her own pace, and via, desktop, laptop, tablet or mobile.
The course consists of six modules, which include lecture videos, case studies and activities, which can be completed in six to eight hours, and in multiple sessions

The six modules are as follows:
This module covers the introductory aspects of diabetes, viz. definition of diabetes, epidemiology of diabetes, classification of diabetes, pathophysiology of diabetes, diagnostic criteria for diabetes and prediabetes, and glycemic targets and monitoring.
This module talks about the various non-pharmacological strategies employed in the management of diabetes, and covers in brief the aspects related to diet prescription in diabetes, exercise planning in diabetes, tobacco cessation and stress management.
This module discusses the pharmacological management of diabetes, viz. the various oral anti-diabetic drugs and injectable therapy. It also covers the insulin injection techniques, use of glucometer and advances in the monitoring of diabetes.
This module talks about the three main microvascular complications of diabetes, viz. diabetic kidney disease, diabetic neuropathy and diabetic retinopathy.
This module discusses the three main macrovascular complications associated with diabetes, viz. coronary artery disease, stroke and peripheral arterial disease. It also covers the important topics of hypertension in diabetes and diabetic dyslipidemia.
This module covers four important topics related to diabetes, not covered in the previous modules. The topics include: Gestational diabetes mellitus, infections and diabetes, emergencies in diabetes, and inpatient management in diabetes.
Each module begins with a pre-test consisting of MCQs, and concludes with a post-test to assess the learning progress of the course participant.
At the end of the course, there is an exit exam, which the participant has to clear in order to obtain the course completion certificate.
